The virtual trip has gave me a deeper insight on Bhutan and I have learned plenty on how Bhutan became the greenest country as well as their interesting cultures and traditions.
1) Bhutan's government
This is crucial to how Bhutan became one of the greenest country. Bhutan's constitution orders that 60% of it landmass will be protected and maintained as forest. This restricts a lot of possible deforestation from happening and offenders will be fined heavily or even be jailed. This is why Bhutan is only the country in the world that is carbon negative.
2) Decreased tourism
Bhutan has gone for a low impact tourism to control and maintain their beautiful forests. They do this by only letting tourists in if they have a visa and paid for the “Minimum Daily Package Fee” which both added up, might cost up to $300. Tourists are also not allowed to explore the country freely as they must have a officially approved tour guide to guide them around. Not to mention, a daily sustainable development fee of $65 is also included in the package which is used to maintain forests and for the development of Bhutan.
3) Clean energy and low carbon output
70% of Bhutan's land is covered by trees and this means that Bhutan can absorb a lot of carbon dioxide. It even absorbs more carbon dioxide that it produces! Bhutan absorbs roughly seven million tons of carbon dioxide annually and only produces around two million tons. Bhutan also exports most of the renewable hydro-electric power that it generates from its rivers which also contribute to the low carbon output of the country. Bhutan also introduced imported electric cars and has suspended import taxes to encourage its people to buy them.
4) Free electricity for rural households
Bhutan's government provides free electricity to rural households in order to decrease the use of fire woods and the cutting down of trees to protect and maintain its forests.
5) Bhutan's people
Bhutan's people also contribute to maintaining and protecting the country's forests as they believe that the trees and mountains are citadel for deities and gods. This is why Bhutan's people respect and appreciate their mother nature so much.
How to improve the conditions of our natural environment?
Malaysia is one of the top plastic polluter of oceans and this is a serious issue for the country. One way we can reduce plastic pollution is to recycle plastic waste. For example, we can do this by disposing plastic waste to recycle bins. Many plastics of the ocean end up on the beaches and this is a best opportunity reduce plastic pollution in ocean before it gets washed away to the ocean again. You can do this by going to a local or the nearest beach to you to pickup plastics and recycle them.
Global warming is a major issue and can end up destroying our greenery and environment It is all mainly due to carbon dioxide that ends up in the atmosphere and traps heat which gradually makes the environment hotter. We can slow down or reduce the impact of global warming by using more clean energy such as solar and electric energy. For example, you can use bikes or electric vehicles as a form of transportation because they don't produce carbon dioxide. Another way to reduce the impact of global warming is to stop burning trash as they produce a lot of carbon, instead, try to recycle the trash.
