project 1B
design strategy and exploration
ipoh pottery hub.
Building upon the foundation laid in P1A, this phase focused on developing an Urban Room or City Hub as a “third place” that promotes social, recreational, and cultural engagement. The design aimed to enrich the neighborhood by fostering interaction, well-being, and inclusivity, while aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 10 and SDG 11). The process involved a thorough analysis of user needs, city aspirations, and the urban context to create a people-centered, activity-driven space that enhances the site's identity and overall quality.
reflection
After conducting research and interviewing locals, I discovered that Ipoh's pottery heritage is rapidly fading. This realization inspired me to propose a pottery gallery to celebrate and preserve the city's rich cultural legacy. Throughout this phase, I gained valuable insights into the significance of pottery in shaping Ipoh’s identity and traditional heritage. I am grateful for the guidance of Ar. Prince, who provided invaluable suggestions on integrating architectural features and spatial ideas into my design.
One of the most unexpected yet rewarding experiences during this project was being selected for an External Review at Veritas Design Group. Although it came as a surprise, I embraced the opportunity to represent Taylor's ADP batch and receive constructive feedback from industry professionals. While my presentation skills were not as strong as I had hoped—I became nervous and struggled to present my ideas concisely—I see it as a valuable learning experience. Despite the challenges, I have no regrets and am thankful for the opportunity and the support I received from Ar. Prince.
